The world's largest heart-shaped black diamond is exhibited in Rome

May 2002

After the world-exclusive exhibition of the exceptional “Spirit of de GRISOGONO” at the National Museum of Natural History in Paris, de GRISOGONO is exhibiting the world's largest heart-shaped black diamond, weighing 115.34 carats, at the SCUDERIE DEL QUIRINALE in Rome.

The famous Swiss jeweller Fawaz Gruosi is the originator of the current enthusiasm for black diamond. It was he who launched the fashion for black diamond in 1996 and created some eye-catching collections of jewellery and watches set with black diamonds.

He is now exhibiting a heart-shaped black diamond, the largest black diamond of such cut in the world, weighing 115.34 carats. This heart is the centrepiece of a necklace made of 58.77 carats of black diamonds, 378 white diamonds and 14.10 carats of tsavorites, mounted on white gold.

It will have taken three years to cut this heart-shaped diamond. Received rough in 1998 from India and weighing 300.12 carats, it was originally intended to have an oval shape. But as cutting progressed, the material of the stone proved extremely fragile and very difficult to work. The decision was taken to cut this diamond in the shape of a heart, despite the considerable loss of carats. In fact, the final weight loss after cutting and polishing was approximately 184.78 carats. This heart-shaped diamond was cut in Antwerp by one of the greatest black diamond-cutting specialists in the world.

Three unique rings are also being exhibited, all made of black diamonds enhancing unique stones, including a 25.06 carats, emerald-cut fancy green diamond mounted on a white-gold setting enhanced by 7.03 carats of black diamonds.

These exceptional jewels can be admired at the exhibition “Diamonds” that will be held until July 1, 2002 at the SCUDERIE DEL QUIRINALE in Rome.
