Speaking at the opening of Malawi Women in Mining Association (Mawima) leadership skills workshop in Blantyre, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Affairs, Ms. Martha Nasho, said her ministry is keen to empower women because of the role they play in supporting their families through the businesses they conduct in lime production, gemstone, aggregate and brick mining. She said that apart from helping their families, women's contribution in the sector include generation of employment, import substitution and inducing infrastructure development especially in the rural areas.
“It is for this reason that my ministry will always be in the forefront to support Mawima to be an effective organization that will break the gender barrier in the male-dominated mining business,” she said.
