Once again, MB&F’s M.A.D. Gallery takes us back to our childhood- this time with Swiss renown photographer Marc Ninghetto who drags up our favorite cartoon memories and puts them at the heart of his new series of photographs he calls “The Solitude of a Machine”.

The machines at the heart of the exhibition are no other than the Japanese manga robots Grendizer and Astroboy, respectively known as ‘Goldorak’ and ‘Astro, le petit robot’ in French. In 15 years, and as many exhibitions Marc Ninghetto, a Swiss native, had never found an excuse nor a platform to carry out a series of photos based on his childhood… until he was asked to create something for the MB&F M.A.D. Gallery, a true parallel with the genesis of the brand. The result is a superb collection of fine art prints that subtly manages to imbue these cult robots with a sense of otherness and estrangement on finding themselves in a real-life terrestrial environment.

To do so, Ninghetto uses a technique he calls ‘digital sampling’, which he has gradually developed over his career, involving shots of 3-D robot models incorporated with photographs from his personal images databank. Putting into light the superheroes of the 40-years-old generation, Grendizer and Astroboy find themselves separately towering over big-city skyscrapers; a dot in the sky above a nexus of urban flyovers; or skulking in shadows of a small-town gas station.
