VENDEE GLOBE 2005 : RETURN OF DOMINIQUE WAVRE

February 2005

At 06 hours 15 minutes and 20 seconds local time in France on the 8th of February 2005, the 60-foot monohull Temenos-Hublot, helmed by the Swiss skipper Dominique Wavre, crossed the finishing line of the Vendée Globe 2004-2005, the solo round-the-world ocean race, without assistance, starting from Les Sables d’Olonne (France).

Dominique Wavre finished in fourth place out of the 20 participants (7 have abandoned) in this perilous solo ocean racing with no assistance nor stop. The race time for covering 23,680 nautical miles is 92 days, 17 hours, 13 minutes and 20 seconds.

Nevertheless Dominique is achieving the feat of beating the record set in the Vendée Globe 2000 by Michel Desjoyeaux of 93 days, 3 hours, 57 minutes and 32 seconds. He is confirming his new Hublot chronograph “SuperB” was part of his success in betting against time.

During his press conference Dominique declared having had an even more intense and difficult Vendée Globe than the last edition, racing a fabulous match race with his friend Sebastien Josse on his way back up the Atlantic and the most violent Cap Horn and perilous confrontations with icebergs. Dominique's boat appeared as if by magic out of the black immensity of the Atlantic to the yachts that set out to meet him around 05:15 on the morning of the 8th of February. The other highly emotional moment was the legendary re-entry of the boat into the port entrance channel at Les Sables d'Olonne around 06:35.

It was here that Dominique took out his distress rockets and stood on the prow of his yacht to wild acclaim from the large crowd that turned out despite the very early hour and the wailing of foghorns.

Dominique also paid homage to his monoskull, praising its extraordinary performances in violent winds that kept going even though it was damaged and could have risked a fatal dismasting. He was happy that older boats could have been successfully optimized opposite new boats. Vincent Riou was first to cross the arrival line and an optimized boat and it proves the strength and talent needed by the skippers in this mythic race. He was also first to come on the deck to congratulate his skipper friend Dominique. We are transmitting you the first images of the return of Dominique Wavre this 8th of February.
