Born in Geneva in 1964, Olivier Roux was trained as an engraver at one of Geneva’s finest workshops. In 1984, at the young age of 20, Roux started his own business engraving objet d’art. Restless in spirit, Roux decided to travel and in1989 he took off to experience the world. For three years, he travelled the globe and was inspired by a variety of techniques and concepts. In 1992, he joined an engraving workshop run by several associates and, for the ensuing years, produced works of art independently.
Still, he was driven by a desire to bring his ideas and work to fruition under his own name. He developed his own series of engravings and, in 2001, realized his long-held personal ambition and launched his own line of hand-engraved timepieces. Each of his watches evokes a sense of human nature, geography and cultural diversity that constitute the richness of our global environment.
Montres Olivier Roux’s collection includes models named for Egyptian, Greek, Roman and Aztec gods and goddesses. Each piece is hand engraved and created in very limited numbers. Roux handcrafts in each of the three main colours of gold and the motifs he utilizes for engraving include arabesques, curves, stylized lines and geometrics that shimmer in light and dramatic depth.
Passionate and enthusiastic about his work – which is more of a love than an occupation – Roux hand engraves the gold cases of his watches with the utmost attention to detail. Etching out the hard gold surfaces and working in relief techniques that date back to the 1700s and 1800s, Roux has deftly revived this fine art of embellishment.
In addition to their beautiful engravings, some of Roux’s watches also feature enamelling and diamonds. Each watch is fitted with a top qualitry leather strap and houses supreme automatic movements. With the exception of the mechanical chronograph models, each watch houses a 21-jewelled movement.
Watches that revolve around the Egyptian themes include Maet (goddess of truth, order and justice) and Nouf (named for the goddess of the sky). Maet is crafted in 18 carat gold and features a dial ornamented with guilloche patterns. Nouf, crafted in 18 carat white gold, features black enamel set within nearly a carat of exquisite Top Wesselton VVS quality diamonds.
Drawing inspiration from Greek mythology, Roux has created Athena (goddess of wisdom, science and art), Circe (named for the goddess of magic), Helios (god of the sun and light) and Kronos (god of time). Athena is crafted in 18 carat yellow gold and features an enameled bezel that is tobacco in color. Circe is elegantly crafted in 18 carat white gold with a white dial. The entire case and case-to-bracelet attachment is engraved with starburst-like Greek designs.
Photo: Called the Kronos, this watch is named for the Greek god of time. It is crafted in 18 carat yellow gold and hand engraved with a traditional Grecian motif.
