“Important Pocketwatches and Wristwatches,” a Christie's auction slated for May 15 in Geneva, will be “the most important sale ever to be offered in the history of the company,” according to the auction house.
Touting the royal provenance of many of the auction's 451 lots, Christie's said in a release that it expects the sale to garner nearly $7.7 million. As most of the featured watches have remained largely in private ownership, 80 percent of the sale's offerings are new to the marketplace, according to Christie's.
Top lots at the sale will include: a Patek Philippe pocketwatch made in 1895 on commission of a French royal family member, in 18-karat gold embellished with a fleur-de-lis pattern and the French royal coat of arms, valued at $230,000-$385,000; and a pink gold Patek Philippe wristwatch valued from $423,000-$577,000, given to leading Russo-French composer Igor Marketvitch in 1948 by his second wife, bearing an inscription in a facsimile of her handwriting. In addition, the sale will feature lots from Audemars Piguet, Rolex, Breguet, Cartier, Vacheron Constantin and more.
